places to eat
We can recommend many options for lunch and dinner - either locally or further afield. With more than a dozen local venues being recognised by Taste of the West, you're spoiled for choice but some of our favourites are listed below. Booking ahead is recommended and in some instances discounts for our guests are available.
The Oyster Shack in Bigbury serves exemplary local crab, lobster, oysters and shellfish set in laid back surroundings that Tom Parker-Bowles called 'a celebration of native seafood and Devon beaches, of eating, drinking and being merry'. (10 minute drive).
Journey’s End Inn in Ringmore is a lovely 13th century pub and current holder of Food Drink Devon's 'Best Pub' award. It has an excellent, modern menu combining traditional favourites with fresh Asian flavours. It's a very warm and welcoming pub in a picture perfect village setting. (10 minute drive)
Beachhouse in South Milton is a small but perfectly formed seafood shack with unforgettable sea views from the clifftop. It's open all day and serves the freshest fish and seafood in laid back, funky surroundings. (25 minute drive, but well worth it)
Dolphin Inn in Kingston is our local pub and only an 5-10 minute walk away. With its open fireplaces, wood panelling and local beers, this is a proper country local.
Twenty Seven by Jamie, Kingsbridge. Fine dining in the heart of the South Hams. Jamie Rogers is a past MasterChef: The Professionals semi-finalist and has worked with South West culinary legends Michael Caines and Paul Ainsworth. Worth booking in advance for its great tasting menus and wine pairings. The cocktails are to die for. (15 minute drive)
The Schoolhouse, Mothecombe. Laid back dining by the sea, both outdoor and indoor. The Schoolhouse is the sister restaurant to The Beachhouse in South Milton. With great seafood, coffee and cakes, it's open all day and just a stone's throw from one of our best local beaches. (20 minute drive)
Wild Artichokes, Kingsbridge. Chef Jane Baxter, founder of Leon and regular guest on Saturday Kitchen, hosts pop-up feasts across the South Hams. Food is elegant but hearty, using delicious local ingredients to produce authentic cuisines from around the world. (locations vary)
